Fishing Report: There are beautiful shoals and shoal bays which offer excellent fly fishing. The inlet creek is at the east end, (it is also the spawning channel for the trout) with an outlet and an irrigation dam at the extreme western end of the lake.

There is a large shallow area at the western end of the lake with an average depth of less than 20 feet where weed beds provide habitat and shelter for fish and insect alike. Various Nymph patterns, Leech and Blood Worm can be very successful when used in this area. To the east of this shallow area, there is an abrupt drop off which allows the fish to stay in the deep cold water rising to take an appealing insect or lure.

Chironomid fishing in June can be very exciting and there is one area known as the “Twin Bays” where the fly is particularly productive. Heffley Lake offers bays, weed beds, shoals with marl bottoms and submerged islands to test an anglers ability to “match the hatch”.

Fly fishing is not the only way to tackle with one of this lake’s wily Rainbows. They can be enticed by trolling fly patterns, (Shrimp, Doc Spratleys, Damsel or Dragon Flies) or using light weight spin gear with Hot Shots or Flatfish. Good ol’ troll with worm can also be productive particularly during the late summer.

Development on the lake is concentrated on the North shore. The south side with the exception of one of the resorts is virtually untouched and offers an opportunity for some excellent wildlife viewing. The lake is home to Bald Eagles, Osprey and Golden Eagles who summer in the Interior to rear their young.

Other varieties of water birds such as Loons, Golden Eyes, Buffle Head, Red Necked Grebe, Canada Geese and Mallard are also summer residents on Heffley. Moose, Deer and Muskrat also make for interesting viewing.
